Florida State University has been pre-selected by the service-learning advisory committee for inclusion in the inaugural edition of the Guide to Service-Learning Colleges and Universities. General information about service-learning in higher education will be included as introductory material in the Guidebook, based on information resources acquired from the National Service-Learning Clearinghouse.  The Guide will profile four-year colleges and universities as well as two-year institutions and community colleges that are leaders in service-learning. Selected institutions demonstrate that they integrate community service with academic study to enrich learning, teach civic responsibility, and strengthen communities while using a deliberate and planned approach in order to fulfill the standards of service-learning.

Counseling Center Draws Raves
posted 02-09-2007 by B. Furbee

The University Counseling Center once again scores high on the Client Satisfaction Survey distributed in November. Many responses rated The University Counseling Center “Excellent” in the areas of relationships, consultations, as well as aesthetics and scheduling.  Of the clients who participated in the survey, most responded that they would return to the Center if needed, and would recommend The Center to others who may seek counseling.
During fall 2006, the University Counseling Center supported more than 1,000 students by the services of group or individual sessions.  Issues that brought students to The Center include romantic/family relationships, anxiety, depression, academic adjustment, and self esteem.
Consultations are available to students free of charge, and The Center offers various counseling methods tailored to meet the needs of students.  All services provided are confidential. For more information about services, call (850) 644-2003.

FSU REVIVES ITS YEARBOOK TRADITION WITH NEW ‘RENEGADE’
posted 11-13-2006 by B. Furbee

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - It’s back.
After more than a decade-long hiatus, Renegade, Florida State University’s annual student yearbook has arrived on campus. With a theme of “Revival,” the 2005-2006 edition is the first since FSU stopped producing the yearbook in the 1990s.

While many colleges and universities across the country are eliminating their yearbooks because of a lack of interest, FSU is bucking the trend by resurrecting the time-honored tradition.
“The return of the yearbook is part of President T.K. Wetherell’s vision to develop a stronger sense of class identity among students,” said Vice President for Student Affairs Mary Coburn. “Our alumni also expressed interest in bringing the yearbook back because it provides a personal connection to the university after graduation.”

Plans for an even bigger and better edition of the Renegade for next year are already under way, with free senior portrait sittings taking place Nov. 27-Dec. 1 and Jan. 29-Feb. 2 in Room 305 of the Oglesby Union, according to yearbook adviser Anthony Marvin.

Although FSU’s yearbook tradition dates back more than a century when the university was known as the Seminary West of the Suwannee, this latest hiatus was not the first time there has been a break in production. After a few name changes including a 38-year run as Flastacowo, an acronym for Florida State College for Women, and another 35 years as the Tally-Ho, the yearbook was shut down because of a controversial editor in the 1970s. The yearbook could not be kept down, however, and six years later it was resurrected under the name Artifacts. The yearbook was renamed once again in 1987-88 when it became known as Renegade.
